The companion to Winter — the same bedroom window, the same corner of Old Swan, Liverpool. A different season. A different kind of seeing.
In Summer the ash trees on the grounds of Allenby Square nursery are in full leaf, and the view closes in. The towers that Winter makes fully legible are now partially hidden, the foliage dense in the foreground. The Blockbuster stands in full summer colour. The elm on Elms House Road holds its place. The clock tower of the old Walton hospital remains just visible on the horizon.
What Winter reveals, Summer half-conceals. The view in winter is open and legible; in summer it is full and partially obscured. Both versions are needed to hold the complete picture of a panorama that existed from roughly 1996 until the mid-2010s, when the site was demolished — the nursery gone, the trees cut down, the Blockbuster replaced, the whole view built over.
The same view. A different light. The same losses.
Made from memory, from photographs taken across the years of demolition, and from twelve greyscale panorama studies. The view no longer exists.
