Winter — Original Hand Embroidery in Beechwood Hoop

This piece documents a real and specific view in Old Swan, Liverpool — a panorama visible from a bedroom window from roughly 1996 until the mid-2010s, when the site was demolished.

At the centre stands the old Blockbuster Video store, gone now, replaced by a Dreams and a Tile Mountain. But the building was never really the subject. When Blockbuster was finally demolished, the view opened up to reveal things hidden for years — the main tower of the Meat and Fish Market on Prescot Road, and beyond it, the tower of the old Newsham Hospital in Newsham Park. Absence restoring what absence had taken. Then that view too was built over.

To the right of the Blockbuster stands an elm tree on Elms House Road — one of three surviving elms on a road named after a house long since demolished and replaced by Elmway Close. Months were spent searching for elm trees without realising one had been visible from that window the whole time.

Behind the store, the ash trees marking the grounds of Allenby Square nursery — a place attended in childhood, now demolished, the trees themselves cut down in preparation for development. Between them, the tower of St Anne’s Stanley Church on Cheadle Avenue anchors the middle distance. On the horizon, just visible, the clock tower of the old hospital in Walton — a landmark always visible from this spot.

Winter shows the panorama at its most open: the trees bare, the towers fully readable, a sky that gives everything room. Made from memory, from photographs taken across the years of demolition, and from twelve greyscale panorama studies. A companion piece, Summer, shows the same view in full leaf.

This is a landscape of things that were. Some gone before they were noticed. Some gone while they were being watched.

Hand embroidered in cotton thread on cotton fabric, mounted in a Nurge 2 hoop. The backing carries a signed wooden disc, a felt lining, and the monogram, title, medium and year inscribed by hand. Comes with a signed certificate of authenticity. Carefully packaged in acid-free tissue and rigid boxing for safe delivery.
