Those who survive the harsh conditions of the untamed seas have little time for small-talk, and so prefer to introduce themselves in simple ways: for example, displaying a trophy they took from a savage beast that made the mistake of crossing their path.
That being said, it’s not usually a good idea to question whether or not the person wearing the trophy is the one who necessarily *earned* it, so they can also be a fashion statement.
Many an aged mariner has more than a few tall tales to tell over a mug of ale or glass of rum, and some will speak in hushed tones of the colossal whales that can tear a ship in half with a single bite.
Like the Biblical monster of old, they call these beasts the Leviathan: faster than the wind, skin as tough as iron and white as a blizzard, and with a roar like thunder.
There are few who ever encounter the Leviathan and live to speak of it, and those who do seldom return to sea ever again.
