The Delvers of the Crystal Caverns discovered the veins of these crystals long ago, and for generations used them to identify each Dig Team by colour. Though the Delvers are gone now, the Shards they used remain.
Absorbing light from any nearby source, the Shards were used as beacons in the darkness of the caverns for any who became disoriented, and also to help rescuers find the injured in the event of a collapse.
Unlike the Delver’s Shards, the Spirit Shards were said to be able to capture a departing spirit at the moment of death, and that such spirits could be released only by those highly skilled in Dark Magick.
