Contrary to popular belief, the breath of most dragons is not innately magical. Rather, it relies on a venom of sorts, unique to each species of dragon and many pseudodragons.
The venom is secreted from glands in the dragon’s throat, becoming a vaporous spray, which activates on contact with the air, producing the various effects commonly believed to be the dragon’s breath. When safely sealed away, it remains harmless, but still retains a visual remnant of its more volatile nature.
Included with this phial of venom is a “Dragon’s Pact” amulet, said to be a sign of loyalty to a Fire Dragon. It is claimed that in exchange for their loyalty to a Dragon, mortals would receive powers beyond the scope of their ordinary peers. Those bound to a Fire Dragon were granted great physical strength and resilience, insight into their enemies’ tactics in battle, and the ability to resist the harmful effects of fire and smoke, much like those bound to a Red Dragon: but unlike a Red Dragon, Fire Dragons did not demand servitude and could grant those who swore their loyalty longer lives and enhanced vitality.
