WHY USE A SNUFFLE MAT?

Snuffle mats, originally developed in The Netherlands for dogs, are a great way to engage a dog’s brain and to enable them to use their natural sniffing and foraging instincts. Hiding a few pieces of dry kibble or dry treats in a snuffle mat then asking your dog to sniff them out is actually tiring for a dog, due to the huge size of their sniffing system compared to ours, and it helps to stimulate the release of calming hormones. So using a snuffle mat can help to reduce stress in an anxious dog, calm an overexcited dog or simply relieve boredom. The latter is also really useful for dogs that are sick, elderly or on restricted exercise. Another benefit for dogs who appear to ‘inhale’ their food is feeding their full meal of dry kibble hidden in a snuffle mat, rather than in a bowl, greatly slows them down. Note that although snuffle mats were developed for dogs, they are also great for other pets such as cats, rabbits and other small furry pets.

HOW TO USE A TUG and SNUFFLE MAT

If your pet is new to snuffling mats just sprinkle some tasty dry treats on the surface of the mat so that your pet can easily find them and they will quickly learn that snuffling results in food. Gradually hide the treats further and further into the mat to enhance their foraging experience and increase the time it takes them to snuffle them all out.

As with all snuffle products and toys we recommend that you always supervise your pets with our products. Regularly check there are no loose strips of fleece.
